From the Principal

Dear Parents, Staff and Students

Sunday 28th April is the fifth Sunday of Easter. The readings at Mass reference Jesus’s last two weeks on earth, before his Ascension into Heaven.  One of the readings from John’s Gospel talks about God commanding us to believe in Jesus Christ and to love one another. We talk to the children every day about Making Jesus Real by loving others.  It is a simple message.  We can reflect on how different the world would be if only we all loved like Jesus.  It is a message worth remembering.  The children are good at knowing how they should be like Jesus.  Sometimes we, as adults, can really learn from our children about the simple message of being loving human beings.

Dear Lord,

May we dwell together in love and peace all the days of our lives, seeking one another’s welfare, bearing one another’s burdens and sharing one another’s joys.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Kindy and Pre-Kindy 2025

The Open Day and School Tours held earlier this week were well attended by prospective families.  I am most grateful to the Year 6 students for guiding our visitors around the school and answering questions.  They did an excellent job!  Interest in the school is far higher than the places available in Kindy and Pre-Kindy for 2025.  Parents with younger siblings must register their children for enrolment by completing an enrolment form. Please do this is as soon as possible if you have not already done so.  We would not like to see siblings miss out on a spot at our school.

Mother’s Day Stall and Mass

Please be reminded about the Mother’s Day Stall on Monday 6th May and again on Tuesday 7th May for Pre-Kindy.  The stall is an opportunity for the children to purchase something special for their Mum.  An information flier has been sent home and is available in this newsletter.  Sincerest thanks to Sheree, and the parent helpers, for organizing the stall and for sourcing the lovely gifts that will be available for purchase.

Please keep Friday 10th May free to attend the Mother’s Day Mass and morning tea, to be held in the undercover area commencing at 9.00am.  Mums, grandmothers, aunts and special friends are all invited to come along.

Building Program

I had a meeting with the builders this week and things are progressing well.  The roof timbers will be delivered on Monday and the works on the roof will commence next week.  The Year 1s will be in the library for a few more weeks, but we are excited to see the roof construction commencing very soon.

P&F Cadbury Chocolates Fundraiser

The P&F have organised a Cadbury Chocolate fundraiser.  Details about the fundraiser are in the newsletter and have been made available to parents, via the class pages.  Please support the P&F as they continue to raise money for the re-surfacing of the courts.

Lock Down Drill

Please be aware that we have a lock down drill next Wednesday.  The drills for lock down and evacuation are held each term and are important for our preparation and compliance.  Please explain the need for the drill to your children, if you would like to.  The staff explain examples of lock down to the students. These may include; stray dogs coming on to the school grounds, an unexpected storm event or possibly a gas leak nearby.  We understand that the drill may be alarming, so we try and alleviate this as much as possible by explaining the procedure to the children beforehand.

Attendance

I am grateful to our parents for ensuring their children come to school every day.  Consistent school attendance makes a significant difference to student growth and achievement. School attendance is compulsory for all students commencing in Pre-Primary.  Parents must inform the school, with plenty of notice, if they would like to remove their children from school during term time.  Please contact the administration office, with at least a week’s notice, and fill in the appropriate form to request student leave during term time.  Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

Thank you to Warrant Officer Townley for attending the ANZAC Service this week.  The service was a moving event to honour the legacy of the ANZACS.

Next Week

We wish the Year 1 and 2 students a most enjoyable excursion to Brownes Dairy next week.  Please come along to the Year 5 Assembly on Friday 3 May, commencing at 9.00am.  The Year 5 students have worked hard to prepare their assembly item and it promises to be a not to be missed occasion.

Enjoy this slightly cooler weather and I hope your football team has a win this weekend.

Warm regards.

Kids Struggling with Neurodiversity

More and more we are recognising the neurodiversity we have in our community. But what happens when our kids feel like something is wrong with them, instead of just having a different neurotype?

At Matthew Gibney we are working hard to support our community to learn about neurodiversity and to ensure our school feels safe for ALL students.

Use the QR code to hear from Jonathon Mooney on how we can all better support our kids so that they don’t feel bad, broken, crazy or lazy. There is a lot we can do, and this is a great place to start!

MJR Value and Gospel Story

This fortnight we have been exploring The Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-23).

Parables are little stories Jesus told that teach us about the Kingdom of God.

The teachings of Jesus are for all to hear, the difference is however, how we receive the message and whether or not we choose to follow Jesus. Jesus wants to change the condition of our hearts so his word can produce fruit in our lives. Not everyone receives the Word of God. We must be willing to receive it and allow it to be more important than anything else in the world.  We need to have courage to accept the Word of God in our lives.

Our Making Jesus Real value for this fortnight was ENCOURAGEMENT.  To be a follower of Jesus takes strength and courage. When others are distracted or other things get in the way of listening to God, we can encourage them to make good choices, or to stay firm and Make Jesus Real.

Extend OSHC

Last week for the first week of Term 2, we had a mini celebration, excited to welcome the children back to our service and our new families as well.

The children were very excited to participate in the piñata game we had planned for them and did the beautiful colouring and drawings on the banner.
