From the Principal

Dear Parents, Staff and Students

Prayer for the First Week of Lent

We pray for all those around the world who are vulnerable to the impact of

poverty, violence, and climate change.

May our generosity towards Project Compassion

be a measure of our commitment to global change.

This week at school we have continued to focus on our MJR and UR Strong focus of “Friendliness and Fun.” It is easy to talk about these topics with our children.  The very nature of being children suggests they want to have friends and enjoy having fun with them.  Our job, as teachers and parents, is to encourage them to learn and adapt the values of kindness, empathy and compassion, through role modelling and the explicit teaching offered through the UR Strong program, so they will grow to be happier people.  This in turn creates healthier and happier communities. Students from our earliest years display these core values and begin to understand how the way we treat others, out of the kindness of our own hearts, impacts others and ourselves. We see examples at school every day where our children use the values of friendship to show empathy to others.  They often reach out to those who may be lonely, those who are hurt or upset. It is lovely to see.  Our challenge is to continue to develop the values so that the children will have the tools in their toolkits to become empathetic and supportive young people and adults.

Science Laboratory Opening Invitation – Wednesday 28th February at 9.00am

Parents and friends are invited to come along to the blessing and opening of the Science Laboratory on Wednesday 28th February at 9.00am.  The blessing and opening will take about 20 minutes and will be followed by morning tea.  The event is an opportunity for the staff and students to thank our wonderful P&F for their hard work in raising money for the refurbishment and resourcing of the Science Laboratory ready for the 2024 school year.  Please come along if you can.

Parents and Friends

A huge thank you to the P&F for providing the icy poles after a very hot day at school on Monday.  This was such lovely treat for our children.

Thank you to parents, friends, students, and staff for supporting the Crazy Sock fundraiser for the Church Hall development. The Parish Committee appreciate your generosity towards this project.

Don’t forget the Sunset Series Outdoor Movie Night next Friday 1st March on Olly Worrell Reserve.  The P&F will be providing sausage sizzles, lolly bags and other treats before the movie starts. Please try and come along and support the P&F.

Just one more week before the long weekend.  After the challenging few weeks of extreme weather, the long weekend can’t come soon enough.  Don’t forget we have a Merit Award Assembly next Friday, 1st March.

Please keep the children and families of Israel, Gaza, and Ukraine in your prayers.  The scenes on the television are heartbreaking.  All we can seem to do is to pray for peace and be always grateful for living in a peaceful and free country.

I hope to see you at the opening of the Science Lab on Wednesday.

Enjoy the weekend.

Warm regards

Therese Hussey

Nurturing Empathy and Support Your Child to Manage BIG Emotions

Karen Young, author of some of my favourite books for kids, has shared a great little (10 minute) video on how we can support our kids to exercise their empathy ‘muscles’ and manage those big, overwhelming emotions.

Project Compassion 2024 – Second Sunday of Lent 24 & 25 February

Ronita is 22. She lives with her husband and two children in a barangay (local district) in Quezon City, which is situated in Metro Manila in the Philippines.

Ronita left school when she became pregnant as a teenager. This could have had a life-long impact on her ability to find work and provide for her family but, thankfully, she heard about the Alternative Learning System (ALS) program run by the Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ), Caritas Australia’s local partners in the Philippines.

Through the FCJ, Ronita was able to re-enrol in her studies and continue learning in a safe and flexible environment – even with the arrival of her second child.

After completing her ALS classes, Ronita went on to earn her Grade 12 Senior High School Diploma. With her new diploma, Ronita has now secured a job at a call centre and is looking to a brighter future for her whole family.

“I have now graduated senior school and I am so proud of myself,” she said. “I feel hopeful for the future… Now it’s not impossible for me to achieve my dream… Thank you.”

Please donate to Project Compassion.

Together, we can help vulnerable communities face their challenges today and build a better tomorrow for all future generations.

You can donate through Project Compassion donation boxes and envelopes available from your parish, by visiting or by calling 1800 024 413.
